Julian is 5 years old!!!

I still can remember so well after Julian was born, we would go counting his age by days, then by weeks, by months, and now by years. TIME really has gone by fast. When holding a little Julian in my arms, I wondered how long it would take for him to start walking, since during those days, my tasks around Julian were feeding, changing diapers, playing with him, getting him to sleep, etc. Now here he is, a five-year old boy!

Daddy and I took a while to think of how to celebrate his birthday. I suggested the 3 of us going to Euro Disneyland, which we both agreed that Julian would love it. He initially didn’t know what Disneyland means, so I showed him a bit on my computer what it is like. He asked me then if we did go to Disney, whether he could still have his birthday and if he could still turn 5 years old. Once he knew he could still have all those, then he was very excited, counting how many nights he had to sleep before going there. Julian counts his days by how many nights he has to sleep.

We booked a suite from a hotel nearby Disneyland. Driving to the Disneyland from the hotel took us only about 10 mins. There were 2 double-bed bedrooms, a living room with a dinning area, a kitchen, a bathroom and a shower room. There is also a big shopping mall with outlet stores in the nearby area. So we had breakfast at the restaurant “Paul”. I was already quite satisfied by that.

Disneyland became a lot bigger than what it was when I last visited it over 10 years ago. Julian was super excited. Daddy normally doesn’t get impressed easily, but he was this time by the decoration, all the technical details and equipments. The only set back was the long waiting time, which was some 30-45 mins, and you would only get to sit on those things for about one and half minute. Luckily, Julian was already pleased by numerous shows and the parade. Before we left the park, we let Julian choose a toy as his birthday present. In the park, there were so many stores, so many people and so many choices. He eventually picked a small toy, and was very happy with it. Julian walked a lot that day, which proved he CAN walk that much. After we left the park, we went to have dinner at a French restaurant nearby the shopping mall. They had a good children menu too.

On his birthday, Julian had to go to school, but I did pick him up earlier from school for a doctor’s appointment. I recently found rashes on his body, and they seemed to have spread further and they are itchy. To get an appointment isn’t always that easy. The doctors do not let you see them just because you want to. The doctor assistant initially said it was just some children’s illness meaning the doctor couldn’t do anything. But I just want to ensure it isn’t caused by something else, e.g. allergies. Daddy needed an appointment for himself, and the only possible date was on Julian’s birthday. Eventually the doctor said Julian just has very dry skin that caused the rash, so I only need to put some vaseline on him. Also, we spoke about Julian constantly feeling tired so the doctor has sent him for a blood test to see if he has lack of certain vitamin, calcium or iron, or maybe allergies. In Holland, to do a blood test, you get a paper which you go to the blood test centers another day, and a week later you can check the result at your own doctor again.

After we got back home from the doctor’s, we had to finish getting Julian’s mini-party ready. His friends were getting off from school, and we had 2 boys and 3 girls over. They played together, and ate their dinner and cake together. It was quite noisy, but they were not too difficult to be pleased. 2 hours of playing were just about right. Julian was very tired after those 2 hours, and went to bed a bit earlier.

Friday morning, we had to bring him in for his blood test. The nurse did try to explain to Julian what she was about to do, but Julian freaked out once he saw the needle. In a way, I was hoping the nurse would just do it quickly without too many explanations. Luckily Daddy was there to help holding Julian arm, while I held his other arm and legs tight before he ended up hurting himself or the nurse. Being a mom, certainly I hate seeing him in pain, and I almost got teary eyes when seeing him like that. To calm him down, we brought him to have some breakfast. After having had a chocolate cake, he finally cooled down, and so we brought him to school.

It’s been awhile

Recently my hubby asked me if he should close the blog. I said then though I’d been lazy with writing my blogs with loads of reasons/ excuses, I still would love to keep the blog going, since this is where I can go back and see how we as a family grow together.

Since Julian started Chinese school, swimming lessons, kungfu lessons, plus our nanny having to recover from her surgery, our household has just gotten busier than ever.

Daddy has always wanted Julian to learn martial arts. Julian tried judo before, but the location and the time was just not a good match for us, so we eventually gave up on that. Now Daddy started taking Julian along to a martial school that is in our town, and Julian did take part of it. Daddy likes this school and he even goes there himself for wushu and tai qi lessons. Though I’m Chinese, I’m not that interested in martial arts. I did give it a try by taking one lesson of tai qi, but it is just not my thing.

Julian is also taking some kungfu lesson at the Chinese school where he also gets to hear more Chinese. The place isn’t big, but the school fee isn’t too expensive at all.

Sometimes really being a working mom is frustrating, since we can’t split ourselves in half. And in Holland, generally speaking the society doesn’t like full-time working mom. Like schools will notify parents about their special events only two days in advance. How can I join in such a short notice? Also, at times people would say we have such a busy life that a child is unfortunately pulled into it.

Today I made an appointment with the social worker from school. It wasn’t about something big, just to see how to possibly improve our ways of guiding Julian, to help Julian develop and improve. Since he started school at the age of four, teachers have always been saying that he is often sleepy, and ask us if he goes to bed really late. Every time I tell them that Julian goes to bed by 7:30 pm and gets up at around 6:30 to 7 am, and he hardly wakes up at night. The social worker asked me if we went by the doctor about this, and certainly I had, in which the doctor said he might just need time to adjust being at school. Yet he has been at school for more than a year now.

Also, the teachers mentioned about Julian crying often and his not wanting to do his tasks. I know about this, but just can’t find out why he does that. I tried both the hard ways and the soft ways. He likes going to school though. The social worker talked with me for quite a bit, and thought that maybe Julian is just a bit somewhat intelligent as his IQ is somewhat higher than the level of his age, and that he feels bored by those tasks. I mentioned about Julian being slow with his routine in the morning, e.g. going to the bathroom, brushing his teeth, getting dressed, etc, which drive us nuts! The social worker told us that with us having a hectic life, Julian may be doing this to slow us down so that he can have more time with us. I really haven’t thought of that. The social worker also reminded us that we should speak with Julian still in a children’s level, no matter how strict we are as parents.

The social worker will follow up on this by speaking with the school, to see if the school has any ways to help him on this. Maybe it’s also a good idea for me to speak with the school teacher some time soon. Of course I don’t want to stress myself or Julian out on this, but I just want to use a different angle to look at this, to see how to help him.

Next week it’s Julian’s birthday. For his birthday present, we have decided to take him to the EuroDisney. Not sure how much the entrance fee in HK is, but here for a family of 3 cost us over 150 EUR. Hope he will enjoy it! He still doesn’t understand what birthday really means, so he even asked us if he can still have his birthday after going to the Disney, and if he can still become 5.

Say Welcome to 幹

I’ve always been fascinated by cats, normal cats, thorough bred cats, you name it.

Mac is supposedly thorough bred but we had our doubts from the beginning. Not a big thing though, he’s a sweet guy and we love him for what he is. Part of me, Lau, though has always been wanting to have a thorough bred cat and so the search started. We eventually came across this Sacred Birman, in need of a new house asap.

Miki , as we’ve decided to call him, is a somewhat shy cat, but fortunately not the least bit impressed by an other cat. Our Mac and Miki had an exchange of some hissing and growling, but no more than that. It’s yet to be seen whether or not these two will become friends, but so far the signs are good.

Taichi Chuan, Wushu?

As some may or may not know I made a rather radical 180 degrees turn changing my lifestyle just after my birthday on the 3rd Sept. I left the outgoing life for what it is and started focussing on losing weight, exercising more and most of all, lead a healthy lifestyle in general.

After all the years of sin (read: too much beer and dinner outdoors) I knew the battle was going to be a tough one. Now, week 4, I’ve already lost over 4kg.’s, I only have a brew in the weekends and commit my weekly days (and the Saturday) to work and sports, Taichi and Wushu to be more precise.

Martial arts is something I’ve always been interested in, made a few attempts that never really lasted any longer than a year, and so it made sense for me to look in that direction for exercise. Shortly after my turnaround I went to visit a martial arts dojo that teaches Wushu amongst others, also known as “Kung Fu” (which, literally translated, means “skill”) to Westerners. Other styles include Taichi Chuan and Qi Gong. I finally chose to take classes in Wushu and Taichi.

Here is a photo I took last Saturday during a demonstration of Taichi Sword by our school.

I myself train Taichi without any weapons and believe me, coming with absolutely no experience it’s quite a  bit harder than it may look (and definitely less  boring!).

With 2 fulltime jobs and a child in this family Taichi gives me a hard needed break and time for myself.

Wushu is a whole different sport. It requires a lot of stamina, endurance, flexibility and most of all, perseverance. I try hard to keep up with the younger  and much more experienced, but at my own pace.

Concluding this post I’d like to share a video I recorded and edited, on YouTube, of said demonstration Saturday 25th Sept. 2010.

Julian’s normal school… real learning!

I saw this article on Julian’s school’s website, which is written for his class by the teachers, so that the parents know a bit what is going on at school. I really enjoy reading this, knowing how Julian is doing at school.

After a few weeks, we finally got used to each other, to the class and to the new rules…

Out of the 5 groups, we came from, and from 2 different locations, it was quite some getting used to. In the meantime, we have already done a lot.

We began with a project about “the most beautiful fish in sea”. We took things along that were about fishes and the sea, we pasted them, painted them, and drew things about the fish.

We got a visit from “Leo the Letter bird”, which bought the letter “V”, and asked us to bring things from home along that start with a “V”, so….

Some small things or photos, since they have to fit into our plastic files. Soon Leo will come to look at them to see if they all are correct, and to bring us a new letter. So keep an eye on the things that are in a file by the window, to see which letter we are talking about.

De vertelkikkers.

The speaker Frog.

There are two frogs on the closet, which we sit in a round circle to talk with. On Monday for instance, the teacher will take the big Frog on her lap, put her fingers behind her back, and whoever manages to get the right guess about how many fingers she has put up, he/ she can start with the Frog talking something about their weekend. The other children will listen along, and may ask questions after the story is told. In such a way, everyone will learn to speak up in class and they will realize it’s not that scary to do so, as you have the Frog with you. If you have not got your turn yet, then we will choose to have you take the small Frog, and you can speak in a smaller group by the table, so that you can tell your own story too.

Last week, someone also came to visit us. “Hara” the rhyme rabbit. She comes out of her hat only when the children rhyme. So we learn how to rhyme. We have even made group work where we drew things that rhyme. The outcome are hanging in the class.

Next to that, we have all got a partner to stand in a line with. The teachers will change the partners regularly, so that you can be with someone else from time to time.

By the door, there hangs a new rule of the week. Every week we learn a new rule, which we need to keep in class. With all of us, we work hard on keeping the rule. This gives some peace, order and clear instruction for the class. We definitely need that.

Then every children gets a task to do, every week a different task, and with different kids. This will be closely linked to the environment you are in, so that you also take responsibilities for that. For instance someone will clean up after we have finished eating, the other person will give water to the plants, or make sure the closet are neat after we finished working. The puppets corner is cleaned up, the pencils are put into the closet nicely and that they are ready to be used again next time. There are plenty of tasks. The task list will be hanging in the class, with the photo of the children who are responsible for.

We have a few more extra visitors in the class. A few bears in the class. If we are working, our teacher can’t always give individual attention to each child at the same time. So the teacher will hang a red sign by the “stop light”, which means you can’t disturb her. We need to learn how to wait for our turn. What should you then do if you really don’t know what to do? We have for that the bears. One bear has a question mark sign, meaning “I have a question.”. The other bear has glasses, meaning “look around you carefully to see if you can find the answer from someone.”. The 3rd and the 4th bears are sitting with their arms around each other, which then means you need to ask someone whoever is the closest to you, or whoever is doing the same task as you are. The last bear has got a little tray. That means if you really don’t know, you can put your name card in it, so that the teacher will come to help you whenever she can. In between, you can do something else.

Like you see, we have enough to learn and everyday we do something new.

We are going to have a great enjoyable, and learning year in this class!
