Nice food in Holland

We have nice cuisine in Holland? Well, yes, in a way.. and I thought after writing a few blogs about Hong Kong, I can mention something I found recently.

Actually not too far away from my home, there is a fishing harbor, just that I had not really gone over there myself to have a look. Recently I was mentioning this to a friend, so I decided to drive over there to see. I first followed the navigation system which normally worked, except this time. I then thought of having passed by there before on my bike, and eventually I found it.

This shop’s selling point is their seafood source comes straight from their fishing vessels, where they catch the seafood in the North Sea. And even their frozen products are processed by themselves straight away.

I read an advertisement from the papers, so I went over onto their  internet site where I found they also do retail, and not just wholesale.

You can even order some fresh made dishes from them. I saw a lot of people eating there.

They have plenty types of seafood, just that I didn’t really take many photos. They also have some North Sea crab legs, which were as long as my arm. Can you imagine how big the crab would have been then! They also sell wine, tubes of seasonings, and some other seafood related products.

I then bought some freshly made deep fried fish filet from white cod fish, fresh local oysters, and fresh shrimps. Julian and Daddy got to enjoy Fish n Chips, while I could enjoy my favorite oysters and shrimps. They were quite fresh! I didn’t know I could enjoy these at home and not just from a restaurant where prices would have been higher.

Hong Kong Post (2)

I know I now write blogs a lot less enthusiastic as I used to. Reasons this time are not only because of being busy and lazy, but also because first Julian got ill and then I got ill as well. Yet I still would like to write down my thoughts and experiences. Wonderful memories they are!

Last time after my last post, many friends left messages saying we should have met up. In fact, both times that I was in Hong Kong, I was in a rush, only with a few days in Hong Kong, simply you don’t feel right about leaving your child at home too long. This time I was already away from home for about one and half week. So apologies to those friends whom I didn’t get to meet up. I’m sure we will meet one day.

This time being in Hong Kong, I spent my whole day out, from early morning till late night, making use of each minute of the days I was there. One day, I met up first with a good friend of mine, to have early morning tea at a famous Hong Kong Lin Heung Kui Dim sum restaurant, where I could have a feel of old traditional Chinese dim sum restaurant. Without Miss B bringing us there, I’m sure none of us, including my friends Ms P and Ms J, would be able to enjoy tea here. Miss P’s son is also a mixed child, looks a bit like Julian. He is adorable, very obedient, a bit shy, but eats anything. He won’t complain for one single bit even though we walked the whole day. It would be nice if Julian were like him in that respect.

After our morning tea, we went to Cheung Chau Island. Probably a lot of people would wonder why I went to Cheung Chau. Well, Miss B brought it up first and I really love Cheung Chau a lot. When I was little, during summer holidays when both my mom and dad had to work, I went with an auntie who had a place there. We would enjoy a few days there. I used to be very scared of dogs, and in Cheung Chau you can find dogs everywhere. Luckily I’m no longer afraid of them, or else I would end up climbing onto someone as if he/ she was a tree.

Cheung Chau Island has changed quite from what it was, but it was still more pleasant to be than in the city, with less tourist from Mainland China, since there is no Louis Vuitton to be found here, but wonderful tasteful snacks here, and some authentic home-made dried shrimps for sale.

Being able to enjoy so many nice wonderful Hong Kong typical snacks, I can’t thank Miss B enough for this. Especially when she went leaving her husband and her kids on a Sunday family day, the day that her husband was off from work. Thanks millions!!!

Hong Kong Post (1)

I have been back from Hong Kong for almost a month, but I have not got around to writing any blog about Hong Kong yet. Reason is busy at work, and busy at home. Julian has been ill for 3 weeks now! And when I get to lay back and relax, I would!

Because of my work, I got to go from Beijing to Hong Kong, as I had to meet up with our auditor in Hong Kong, plus I had meetings with our company secretarial advisors. My hotel stay in Hong Kong was then paid by the company. This time I found myself this boutique hotel, located on Prat Avenue in Tsim Sha Tsui. The location couldn’t be better than that. The price was decent too, though paid by the company, I am still responsible for the budget made by myself, and I am not one of those who really would go out there and waste the company’s money to their advantages. Per night it was just less than HKD 1000/ USD 130. You get free internet access, and they have good facilities like a big fridge and a microwave, very convenient. I would definitely recommend this to others. They also have one in Causeway Bay and Central in Hong Kong.

The evening I arrived in Hong Kong, after I finished checking in, it was already pass 10 pm, so I went out straight away with a friend for hot pot dinner. In Hong Kong, you can eat at anytime! What a nice meal, but a bit too full, so we went taking a walk and checked out a supermarket nearby. You can imagine how late it eventually was when I went to bed that night.

The following morning, I got up before 7 as my hubby called me to have a chat. Then I got out to get ready for meeting up with a friend for a dim-sum breakfast. She has to go to work during the week, and often has to travel for work. And in the weekend, she is quite occupied by bringing her kids to classes. It was very nice of her sparing me some time in the morning to meet me up.

Thank you again for the presents you gave to Julian. Julian loves them and brings them along whenever we go out.

That evening, I also met up with a bunch of old schoolmates, as a small reunion. Two of them were my classmates from kindergarten AND from elementary school. What a joy to have such chance to stay being friends. Some of them I had not seen for some 10-20 years. I got to get back in touch with 2 of them, thanks to Facebook! We had a great night catching up. Hope to do it again soon one day!

Sometime ago I got to know this girl over on the internet, who turned out to be an old schoolmate of mine from high school. She is younger than me, but is quite mature. She works as a nurse in a hospital, and from hearing her experiences at work, I know she has contributed a lot to the society. She is a hard working girl with serious attitude. She also gave me quite some good advices when I needed them before. Thank you! Keep up with the good work, my dear friend! Thank you also for meeting me up so late that evening, and bringing me to places for typical HK snacks!

First stop, via Hong Kong to Beijing for a biz trip

Because of my work, I’d to go to Beijing for work. First I had a stop in Hong Kong before arriving in Beijing. I made use of that transit time and met up with a blogger friend whom I’ve got to know for a few years already. She took her 2 little ones along, and I felt bad about having to bother her parents as well. In fact, I know this friend already for a couple years, and this friendship is somewhat different from the bloggers you get to know these days. In those days, we really put our heart out for our blogmates, and we have more or less common topic to talk about or common goals in life. Therefore, though I don’t come to Yahoo Blog often, I still keep in touch with these friends.

I witnessed her eldest boy growing from a baby to an expressive child, and her daughter growing from a baby to a little girl walking and running around. Time really flies by quick. We had a great time talking and having dim sum together. I even wasn’t that much bothered by the jet lag. In the meantime, her mom kept on ordering nice food for us, and encouraged me to eat more.

Those hours flew by and I’d to go back to the airport for my next flight. Before boarding, I couldn’t resist having my first bowl of fish balls noodles and a red beans drink which turned out to be a good decision. When I arrived Beijing, it was already 9:30pm where the restaurants from the hotel were closed. Luckily, I also brought a cup of noodles in the supermarket in Hong Kong before I left. Just that I couldn’t find anything to use besides these two stirring sticks as chopsticks.

Actually when being on business trips, you don’t get to see anything more than airports, hotels, office, and restaurants. Also, which restaurants you end up going isn’t really up to you to decide. In our Beijing office, we sometimes go to the canteen. There food is served between at noon and 1 pm, but food remains to be cold anyway. I held a big silver tray and then the waiter holding two big scoops would toss food onto your tray. You kind of felt like a prisoner at that moment. I did eat some of that, since I didn’t know when we would be going for another meal. Also, sometimes the restaurants we went to weren’t that hygienic. You would see some people spitting food all over the floor, and even the waitresses weren’t that clean. I once saw a waitress that was serving us went wiping her snotty nose and used the same pair of hands setting our table. They tended to use their own set of chopsticks or spoons all over the food we shared. Maybe I was being picky, but I didn’t want to make a fuss about it either. Luckily, we did go out to other restaurants from time to time, so I did get some nice food as well, like the Beijing duck. And so far, over the whole week I spent there, I didn’t really get sick.

Though I’m Chinese, I don’t think I would ever get used to living in mainland China. I really missed at that time freedom of speech, including media and press. That does not exist in mainland China. Also, even though mainland has gone a lot more civilized, many have gone very rich, somehow it still misses something. Though there are plenty of them walking around in a 4, 5 stars hotel, wearing branded clothing, you really miss a certain feature in them. They would still hold a fork, poke it into a bun and eat it like that. I am not saying I’m much better than others, or that I’m in a higher class, but I think it will still take China quite some time to catch up with the western world.

This time in mainland, my mission was to train our staff in China. Just that maybe there is still certain cultural difference, they would from time to time do certain things that shocked you, e.g. they would just walk out of the training while you were still talking to do something irrelevant. Or they would go chatting online with someone. I’m not a teacher, so I won’t go lecturing them.

This time being in China, I must say I have gone more thick skinned. How’s that? Well, I was in high school in Hong Kong before 1997 (when Hong Kong was handed back to mainland China), so my Mandarin knowledge came mostly from a month of summer course. Yet this time I had more courage to speak up, even though I can’t speak perfectly, but I am not afraid of people teasing me, since those who laugh at me won’t remember, while I can actually learn to speak proper Mandarin.
